About

Julia Ballas

I am a time traveler. I am a dancer, a hunter, a magician, and a healer. I am a lucid dreamer. I have tiger tattoos and lost my left eye in a bar fight. I gave my body to a ghost once. My memories have been trapped in a music box. I am a princess poisoned by a thorn monster. I am all these things, because I am a writer. I sometimes find it dangerous to write in first person because I confuse myself with my character.

One of my life goals was to travel to the western prefecture of Japan, Nagano, to the city of Yudanaka and visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park. I wanted to see the monkeys who soak in the hot springs. I did this in January 2013. It was pretty amazing. If only I hadn’t forgotten my camera battery in Tokyo I would have a million more pictures of those monkeys. I graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Creative Writing. I spent a semester studying in Aberystwyth Wales and have loved traveling every since. I still live in Montana, the place where I grew up. I’m a fourth generation Montanan.

My most recent goal was to change my day-job, and try something different. I’m a baker now, and living bakers hours. I was always a morning person, but 2:30 am is a little early even for me. Thank goodness for siestas. The next trip I want to take? Kayaking in Australia. My biggest writing/personal challenge? Love

My favorite authors are Diana Wynne Jones, Neil Gaiman, China Mieville, Fuyumi Ono, Rick Riodian, Frances Hardinge and many others.

My four absolutely perfect, best-ever books: Kate DiCamillo’s The Tale of Despereaux, Clive Barker’s Abarat, Salaman Rushdie’s Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Philip Pullman’s I was a Rat.
