Getting sick the day after you begin a new blog is not the best way to begin. After my first two experimental posts I had grand plans. Of course, the cold had other ideas. I’ve only now recovered enough that I don’t sleep 12 hours a day, and my brain isn’t too foggy to write. When I don’t write I go a little bit crazy, one step at a time. Now that I’m back on task, I thought I should organize what I’m doing here. Occasionally, I think I should put down some random ramblings like this.
When the book Pride and Prejudice and Zombies first came out I brought it, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I also was not surprised to see other classics re-imagined. I came up with an idea myself based on Jane Austin’s Emma. Emma Rising was going to be a steampunk story, featuring air balloons and odd gadgetry. Of course, I still think I might just write the book, but if I do, it probably will not be based on Austin’s anymore.
The latest book I saw was Alice in Zombieland, which I’ve added to my to-read-list. I also thought of another title for a retelling this weekend: Sleeping Barbie. A modern sleeping beauty tale. Thinking up pitches is not something I do easily, I’m not really a high-concept writer, but I came up with a movie pitch once. It doesn’t have a name, but it would be Mulan Rouge meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If I ever decide to write a historical story set in Paris you can bet it will involve vampires.
I’m not much of a short story writer. I’ve written a few, haven’t sold any. I know I should write more of them, but I can’t seem to get past the first line, or else the idea in the story is more like the first chapter of a novel. My favorite attempts lately have been these:
“I’m looking for a time machine, hope you can help. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Nothing too big or complicated. Just your average time traveling device. I almost made one myself from spare parts, but I thought, wouldn’t it be easier to get one prefabricated.”
“When the spiders started to fall out of my hair in the shower, that’s when I knew I was cursed.”
“I enjoy jumping off buildings.”
“There were more dragons than Misty remembered.”
What I just finished reading: You’ll like it Here (Everybody Does) by Ruth White
What I’m reading next: The Last Apprentice: Revenge of the Witch by Joseph Delaney, (actually I’m already on the chapter with the infamous page 148) and then comes Goblin Quest by Jim Hines. And hopefully soon after that: The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya by Nagaru Tanigawa. (It’s out now!?)
What I’m still playing: Ni No Kuni
What I’m watching: Nekomongatari Shiro, Samurai Flamenco, Galilei Donna, Nagi na Asukara, Non Non Biyori, Gingitsune (Messenger Fox), Beyond the Boundary.
I need to catch up on: From the New World, Hunter x Hunter, Michiko and Hatchin, and Penguindrum
Manga I’m excited for: Yotsuba@ volume 12, Soulless volume 3, Bride’s Story volume 5
I need to catch up on Attack on Titan, House of Five Leaves, Bokurano, Ouran High School Host Club, Dengeki Daisy, Itazura na Kiss.
What I’m cooking? Note for next time: white sauce made with soy milk is sweet. Don’t make lasagna without tin foil in the house, and stainless steel lids are okay to put in the oven. The real question is what are you going to have to breakfast tomorrow? Uh oh. . . .
